So You Want to Start Your Masters . . .

Top 10 Things to Know About  Going
BACK TO SCHOOL 

 

  1. Everyone is just as worried about becoming a student again as you.

    ​- We are all worried about what we post and if it's right.  What matters more is that you joined the conversation.  The discussion is all about exploring different perspectives.  So take the leap and post about your experiences and grow with the conversation.
     

  2. Ask your classmates.
    - If you aren't sure about something ask you fellow classmates, I felt so much better when I asked then to help me clarify what we needed to do.  Their experience will help you navigate the journey.
     

  3. Start your Portfolio Project now!!
    - Ask your advisor what options are available to begin your project and take time at the end of each class to build your reflection... trust me it will save your time later :)
     

  4. Learn about APA 
    - Learning the ins and outs of APA citation is an ongoing challenge for me.  So ask feedback and resource suggestions and the best ways to track your references...there's tools to help you with that;)  
     

  5. Online means flexibility
    - Build your learning into your day just like you'd plan your work day.  Flex is great unles you flex it to the last minute.  Be diligent try to do a bit when you can and make it work for you.
     

  6. It's intense but you can do it!
     

  7. Find a support network.
    - Everyone in your network does the masters with you ;)
    - Be thankful for the amazing people in your life that help you get through this it wouldn't be possible without them.
     

  8. Get to know your Advisor or find a Mentor.
    - Finding a person who can help you navigate the university part of the ETAD journey is very helpful.  That person can help you sort through which classes and how to best plan your program.  If you aren't sure, as who your advisor is and make contact :)
     

  9. Time Management
    - Life is crazy and you do the best you can to take advantage of the learning.  Coming from a recovering marks addict like myself... you really need to step back and think about why you are in the program.  It's about learning.  So do the best you can to manage your time and do the best you can with the time you have.... and if you find a great way to manage time... let me know:)
     

  10. The ETAD network you develop is the best part!!
    - I've said it many times in my reflection but the people you learn with truly make the concepts come and alive with relevance and authenticity.
