ECUR 809 - Models and Methods for Evaluation of Educational Programs

Program Evaluation with Dr. Marguerite Koole was the third class in my ETAD journey.  It was my first intersession course.  It's great to take intersession and summer session classes but the journey is intense.  I found it tough to keep up with the online discussion, accelerated readings and weekly assignments.  So just be prepared when you join a summer or intersession class that things move quickly and its intense but it's so nice to be done a credit in 6 weeks.

In this class we worked through the beginning steps of planning out a program evaluation.  I appreciated Dr. Koole's support of my decision to apply my learning to my Color By Amber home based business.  It gave me the opportunity to thoroughly examine the Training Supports available to new styilsts.  The resulting analysis reinforced my decision to build a website to help organize, support and provide team specific training to my downline.

We began our analysis by working through a detailed program planning worksheet.

Next we worked on creating a logic model.

Following this we created a survey to enhance our understanding of the process.

  • I used a Google Form to survey new and experienced stylists.  An image of this is available on the bottom right side of this page.

Finally, we linked it all together in our proposed program evaluation plan.

What's 809.3 about?

Models and Methods for Evaluation of Educational Programs
(Online option)

Examines current models for the evaluation of educational programs. The emphasis is on exploring the range of options which is available to the program evaluator and on developing an awareness of the strengths and limitations of the models. Problems in carrying out educational evaluations are also studied: examples of such problems are the utilization of evaluation results and the ethics of evaluation.

Connections....

Color By Amber:

This was the first opportunity I had to focus my analysis on my Color By Amber team.  It was timely as my cross country team was growing and I was searching for a way to support new stylists and their team leaders.  Stepping back and examining what resources head office provided and how I could complement those resources was an important step in learning how to better support my growing team.

We are now 90 stylists strong across Canada and have just branched into the US, so providing support to stylists and helping team leaders grow their teams is an ongoing challenge.  Designing online supports has make a significant difference because multiple time zones and growing numbers mean we have to develop efficient, replicable systems in order to sustain our growth.

Education:

Although I applied my assignments to CBA, the take away is the same.  You have to really step back and look at the systems and processes that are in place in order to efficiently identify and attempt to address the most significant needs.  What we think at first glance isn't always the barrier that's actually causing the problem.

ECUR 809 broaden my perspectives and provided another lense with which to view the programs and systems that surround us.
