ETAD 803 - Multimedia Design for Learning

This was my 4th class of the program and I took is during summer session in July & August of 2015.  This was one that I felt a little bit more comfortable in.  It focused on working with multimedia which provided me time to learn more about the media I had been using in the classroom. It was also a great opportunity to get to learn with Dr. Jay Wilson.

I've been working with digital multi-media for many years both in my class in my personal life.  I'm an avid photography and I love learning how to use new digital tools online.  I used technology every day in my class and enjoyed the times when I was able to teach in a 1:1 blended learning environment.  I even convinced my school to start a Photography, Vidoe Editing and 21st Century skills class years ago.  It was one of my favorite classes to teach outside of Biology.  It focuses on helping students learn about photography, communications media (video editing) and useful digital skills.  It was very similar to this class.  So I enjoyed 803 because it was a chance for me to dig into the concepts that I often asked my students to learn.

I compiled my assignments into an ETAD 803 website.

You can also view the individual reflections for each assignment below:

  • Assignment 1

    • encouraged us to consider text, color and font to convey the clarity of our message.  It was a challenge to use only text when I have become so accustomed to including images with most PowerPoint Slides.  It really helped reinforce the idea of keeping is simple and using less words is often better than more.  It's also where I started to use the script feature of powerpoint.  Say less on the slide but tell the story and share what's important by mapping out the details you want to share in the notes/script section.

  • Assignment 2

    • gave us the opportunity to record an audio only broadcast.  It enabled us to go through the process of script writing and recording. It was a chance to experiment with the tools that we had available to us and then practice editing.  I learned that investing in a better microphone was important and later that summer I did purchase a Blue Yeti Microphone so that I could record better quality audio.  It was also a reminder that the environment you record in also affects the sound.  It's important to keep your location consistent when you record or you can tell in the playback.  We also learned that as soon as I went to record the podcast with my friend Tracy it was the only time all afternoon that the kids needed to be inside right next to us.  As soon as we finished recording they disappeared back outside.

  • Assignment 3

    • took us into the world of photo editing.  Photography is one of my favourite hobbies so it provided a great opportunity to dig into editing photos.  We practiced editing photos and then used images to enhance an instructional powerpoint.

  • Assignment 4

    • took us into the world of video editing.  We went through the Pre-Production, Production and Post Production stages of video editing in order to create a short video.  I've been working with video for a long time so this was an opportunity to practice making a more formal video.  I've often made videos for weddings, retirements, going away and pep rally events, which include more pictures combined with short interview clips.  Creating an entire video from scratch and filming each portion was more of a challenge.  It took us a while to script the video and then we had to find a device to use.  It was easier when I was teaching Photography and Video editing...I had access to more equipment.  But we perservered with the iPad and used iMovie to edit.  The challenge was keeping our kids and my husband out of the house while we were filming and trying to get the iPad set up and ready to go with only the two of us in the shot.  The other challenge is getting used to being in front of the camera.

  • Assignment 5

    • challenged us to create a digital tour.  Having just been to the Color By Amber International Summit Conference, I chose to compile my pictures into a tour of our head office. That way I could share my experience with my team.  I created a basic PowerPoint using slides and images, scripted it and then used the Office Mix add on record the video.

  • Final Assignment:

    • Our final assignment was to design a webpage.  I choose to design a website where I could compile resources and training for my team.  It was the start of What's Your Story a joint venture with my friend Tracy.  It's still in the very early stages, but eventually we hope to turn it into a valueable resource to share with our team and others. It's called What's Your Story with Steph & Tracy - because we all have stories and what you do today will change your story tomorrow!

Connections....

Color By Amber & Education:

  • This class provided me with the opportunity to break down processes and create step by step training for my Color By Amber team.  It helped me begin to think about instructional design and intentionally designing materials that match the needs of our learners.  It's what we do as teachers all the time but this class encouraged me to think critically about the tools I was choosing and how the subtle choices I make have a direct impact on the learner's interpretation of the material.

    • i.e. Less text - keep it simple

    • Consider the role that font choice and color plays in reinforcing your message.

    • All items included need to be relevant to and reinforce the clarity of the message that you are trying to convey.

  • Design principles are universal.  It doesn't matter if you are in education or business, they are still important aspect to be considered in the design process.
